The transformative power of fire
ILLUSTRATION | DAUGHTER CREATIVE
Working closely with Parks Canada experts we created a toolkit of illustrations for communications promoting the ecological health of Banff National Park. The parks and the vulnerable whitebark pine tree both have a complex relationship with fire. Prescribed burns can be transformative for the ecosystem in a positive way, thinning out dense forest to create clearings and meadows where the whitebark pine has a better chance at survival. Not only is the whitebark pine a delicious snack for grizzly bears, squirrels, and clark's nutcrackers – its sturdy cones can only be opened with the help of these animals.
